英語教師になってからは「何とかして、自分がいいと感じた曲を生徒に聴かせてあげたい」と思うようになりました。そこから、英語の授業に洋楽を取り入れた実践を重ねてきました。
はじめは年に数曲、テストの答え合わせ終了後とか、教科書が早く進んだりしたときなどに行いました。曲はレコードやＣＤからカセットテープにひたすら録り貯めました。歌詞を英語のままタイピングし、１行ごとまたは１行おきに、聞き取って欲しい単語を選択させる問題形式でスタートしました。選択させる単語はたいてい３つ、似たような発音の単語、動詞なら活用形、形容詞なら比較・最上級、代名詞なら主格・所有格・目的格などを並べます。いつだったかALTに作成してもらったところ、明らかに分かるような問題ばかりのプリントを作っていました（私の、引っかけっぽい選択肢もどうかとは思いますが...）。
作成上の注意点として、問題にする単語が歌の中できちんと発音されていることを確認する必要があります。例えば１行目の「a」などを問題にすると、（曲の始めで聴き慣れていないこともあって）ほとんど聞き取れないので要注意！
例えば、USA for Africaの「We Are the World」の歌詞からは下のようなプリントを作成しました。

このプリントを見せながら曲を２回ぐらいかけ、「左の---に入るべき単語を右から１つ選んで丸で囲む」作業をやらせるわけです。多くても３回聴かせれば十分（これ以上は時間もかかるし、生徒も飽きてくる）で、聴かせ終わったら「No.2、when。No.4、are。...」などのように答え合わせをしていきます。
この頃の生徒は「日本語訳が欲しい」とは言いませんでしたが、曲のダビングはよく頼まれました。カセットテープにダビングしたものを、自宅で何度も聞いていたのだろうと思います。
